Varde Averøy
Varde is an historic wooden building located in Averøy, Nordmøre. Completed in 1920, it functioned as a school until the 1970s. Since then, it has undergone multiple changes in ownership and has remained vacant for decades. In 2023, Varde was selected as a Gnist project. Natural State is proud to have been a part of the winning innovation team for this initiative, co-creating a concept and strategy proposal on how to revitalize Varde as a valuable place for the local community.
Gnist 2024 — Nordic Edge and DOGA’s innovation program for sustainable place and business development. Working with Growlab, ANNA Design, SOL-IS Arkitekter, and in close collaboration with Averøy municipality and building owner Per Inge Aakvik.
The innovation team selected for the Varde Project is working with a placed-based approach to sustainable value creation. This means that we develop places for and together with the local community.
The result of the project is a proposal for concept and development strategy for Varde. The concept is based on insights and analysis of the building structure, surrounding area, the local community, local needs and wishes, and the market opportunities on Averøy.
The innovation team propose an open and inclusive place identity for Varde. With a diverse programming for the floors and outdoor areas, Varde can once again become an important building for everyone on Averøy. The concept facilitates varied usage, combining commercial activities with residential, and creates a dynamic that makes the project sustainable and valuable for both the owner, residents and visitors.
